2017
GUATEMALA
Our goals include immersing ourselves in the culture of Guatemala, engaging with the people in communities who host us, learning from example how to live a more simple life, and offering our talents and resources in service to others. While in the Santa Eulalia region, we will present educational sessions at various schools, set up vision screening clinics with fitting of glasses we provide, and obtain surveys about access to healthcare to guide future trip missions. Our final week in Guatemala will be spent in Semaje, where we will partner with Healing Hands Medical Mission to set up their annual clinic to provide consultations, evaluations, and treatment to hundreds of members from the nearby villages.
INDIA
We will begin in Pune, India where we will be working with Tara Mobile Creches, a non-profit health camp set up for migrant construction workers and their families. We will continue our service-learning experience in Northeast India where we will be working in hospitals with the goal of observing the bedside manner of physicians that practice in a rural setting. Our final days will be a cultural immersion experience in Nagaland, where we will be visiting Phesama, Jakhama, and Khuzama Jesuit missions.
PERU
During our four-week mission trip our group will be traveling to Quillabamba and Piura to provide medical services and education to underserved communities. Our time in Quillabamba will be spent working alongside Peruvian physicians providing medical services to the local community. After two weeks in Quillabamba, we will make our way to Piura, a small community north of Lima. In Piura, we will be collaborating with Santisimo Sacramento Parish to provide a wide range of medical services such as post-operative care, hospice care, and primary care to the community. We hope to gain a greater understanding about health disparities and widen our perspective on the health care system through our four-week immersion in Peru.
UGANDA
During our four weeks in southern Uganda, we will be working alongside Global Livingston Institute to provide service to the local people. While the complete details of what we will be doing are yet to be determined, we hope to be able to spend time in the local hospitals and hopefully even serve in relief clinics in the area. GLI recently hired a nurse to work in the area and part of her job is to help us determine a plan of action. I also believe it would be beneficial to experience non-medical service while on this trip, but I do not have any details for that at this time. Finally, my last main goal to is immerse my group in Ugandan culture in as many ways as possible. I have already expressed this desire to GLI and they are confident that they have the necessary connections to make this possible.
